Musk (English name) Chelonopsis moschata Miq.

Japanese: ジャコウソウ（英語表記）Chelonopsis moschata Miq.

A perennial herb of the Lamiaceae family that grows in mountain forests and valley grasslands (illustration). It is said to have been given this name because the whole plant has a fragrant scent. The stems grow in clumps to a length of 50-100cm, do not branch much, and often stand up at an angle. The leaves are opposite, oblong-ovate, sawtoothed, sparsely hairy, and narrow at the base, forming a slightly ear-like shape. Flowers appear in August and September, 1-3 in each leaf axil, on short stalks, 4-5cm long. The calyx is bell-shaped and swells into a slightly spherical fruit.

山地の林の中や谷間の草地に生えるシソ科の多年草（イラスト）。全草に芳香があるところからこの名があるといわれている。茎は株立ちになって長さ50～100cm，あまり分枝せず，多くは斜めに立ち上がっている。葉は対生し，長倒卵形で鋸歯があり，まばらに毛があって基部は狭くなってやや耳状になる。花は8～9月ころ，葉腋（ようえき）に1～3個ずつつき，短い柄があって長さ4～5cm。萼は鐘形で果時にはやや球状にふくらむ。
