Thickening growth

Japanese: 肥大生長 - ひだいせいちょう（英語表記）thickening growth

In botanical terms, the growth of the stems and roots of higher plants along their axis is called elongation, whereas the growth of the stems and roots along their diameter is called thickening growth. In the primary stage, new cells are generated at the apex, and these cells grow individually. In the secondary stage, the cambium is formed, and the phloem is formed on the outside of the cambium, and the xylem is formed on the inside of the cambium, resulting in an increase in thickness. The latter is sometimes called secondary thickening growth.

植物学上の用語としては，高等植物の茎や根の軸方向の生長を伸長というのに対して，直径の方向に大きくなる生長を肥大生長という。1次的には，頂端で細胞が新生され，それらの細胞が個々に伸長することによる生長，2次的には，形成層を生じ，それの外側に師管を，内側に木部を新生するような形で太さが増大する。後者を特に二次肥大生長と称することもある。
