Lee Ki-young

Korean novelist. After graduating from a private school in Cheonan, he traveled to Japan in 1922 to study at the Seijo English School, but returned to Korea after the Great Kanto Earthquake and began writing, with his work My Brother's Secret Letter winning third place in the Kaibyaku literary contest. When the Korean Proletarian Arts League was formed in 1925, he joined and was active as one of its core members, writing numerous novels and critiques, but was imprisoned in 1934 during the second round of the League of Korean Proletarian Artists arrests. His long novel Hometown, serialized in the Chosun Ilbo in 1933, is a realistic portrayal of the social climate of the 1920s, centering on the return of a young man who had studied in Japan to his rural hometown, and lives up to its reputation as a representative work from before liberation. He continued his creative endeavors even after liberation, and established his position as a writer with his novel "Earth," which depicts the agricultural villages striving to build a socialist Korea. He also published other novels such as "The Tumen River" and "A Woman's Life," and was awarded the Kim Il-sung Prize for his achievements. He served as chairman of the Central Committee of the General Union of Literature and Arts.

朝鮮の小説家。天安の私立学校を卒業後、1922年日本に渡って正則英語学校に学ぶが、関東大震災後帰国して創作を始め、『兄の秘密の手紙』が『開闢(かいびゃく)』の懸賞文芸三席に入選。25年カップ（朝鮮プロレタリア芸術同盟）が組織されるとこれに参加、中心メンバーの1人として数多くの創作や評論を書いて活躍したが、34年の第二次カップ検挙によって投獄される。33年『朝鮮日報』に連載された長編『故郷』は、日本に留学した一青年の故郷の農村への回帰を中心に、20年代の社会相をリアルに描いた作品として、解放前の代表作の名に恥じない。解放後も旺盛(おうせい)に創作活動を続け、社会主義朝鮮の建設に邁進(まいしん)する農村の姿を描いた長編『地』によってその地位を不動のものとし、さらに『豆満江(とまんこう)』『ある女性の生涯』などの長編を発表、その功績を評価されて金日成賞を受賞した。文学芸術総同盟中央委員会委員長を務めた。
