Jazz pianist, composer, and band leader. Her real name was Toshiko Akiyoshi. She was born in Liaoyang, northeastern China, where her father worked. She studied piano at the Dalian Music School. She returned to Japan in 1946 (Showa 21) and began playing jazz the following year in 1947. She studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA from 1956 to 1959, and has been active in the USA since 1965. In 1973, she formed a band with her husband, tenor saxophonist and flute player Lew Tabackin, and performed only her own compositions. In a 1978 popularity poll by an American jazz magazine, she was voted number one big band. In 1996 (Heisei 8), the 50th anniversary of her musical career, she received a music award from the Music Pen Club (a Japanese music critics' organization) for her CD of her own compositions, Shiki, and published her autobiography, Jazz to Ikiru (Living with Jazz). In May 1999, he became the first Japanese to be inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame. The hall was established in 1991 to honor artists who have contributed to the development of jazz, and previous inductees include Lionel Hampton, Max Roach, and the late Duke Ellington. The Missouri Hall of Fame office in the United States praised him for "raising jazz to a global art form."
