農業用機械器具を製造する産業部門。機械化による省力化と生産性向上で農業経営の安定化を目指す農家の需要に恵まれて，ほぼ順調に生産額を伸ばしてきた。 1953年の農業機械化促進法の制定も同工業の伸長に寄与している。作物の種類や栽培技術の変遷，農村の好不況といった外部要因によって需要が左右されるのは当然であるが，1960年代になると農業機械の進歩と普及がそうした変動をかなり吸収できるほどとなった。 70年以降の減反政策，米価の停滞などによって農家の農機需要が減退し，業界に危機をもたらしたため，巨大機械メーカーの寡占化が進行した。近年では，農産物の自由化や農業への就業の減退などにより，経営は一層厳しい状態におかれている。特に米自由化問題は米作機械が主力である農業機械メーカーにとっては重大な問題であり，経営の多角化や海外市場への進出などの方策が模索されている。
