In the mid-Nara period, in 757, a political upheaval occurred in which Tachibana Moroe took power in place of Fujiwara no Nakamaro. In an attempt to overthrow Moroe's son, Naramaro, allied with the Otomo and Saeki clans to plot to depose Nakamaro's crown prince, Prince Oi (later Emperor Junnin), who had been supported by Moroe. The plot was discovered before it could be carried out, and Naramaro and his associates were arrested, with Naramaro dying in prison.
