Interstellar Maser

The maser phenomenon, whose principles are applied to microwave amplifiers, was discovered to occur on a massive scale in the universe in 1965. First, the hydroxyl group OH was discovered, followed by the maser radio spectrum emitted by molecules such as water vapor _H2O and silicon monoxide SiO. Many of these are found around stars that violently release gas, such as newborn stars and red supergiants, and it is believed that the radiation from the central star excites the outflowing molecular gas, giving the molecules an anomalous energy distribution.

マイクロ波増幅器などにその原理が応用されているメーザー現象が，宇宙において巨大な規模で起こっていることがわかったのは1965年である。初め水酸基OH，次いで水蒸気H₂O，一酸化ケイ素SiOなどの分子の放つメーザー電波スペクトルが発見されている。その多くは，生まれかけの星や赤色超巨星など，激しくガスを放出する星の周辺で見られ，流れ出す分子ガスを中心星からの放射が励起して，分子に異常なエネルギー分布を与えていると見られる。
