… The structural elements of deformed rocks often show a predominant orientation in a certain direction, which is called preferred orientation, and investigating preferred orientation is called orientation analysis. A method of orientation analysis using statistical processing of measurements of the orientation of structural elements was devised by W. Schmidt in the 1910s, and a geometric analysis method was subsequently developed by B. Sander in the 1930s. It is convenient to represent orientation in three-dimensional space on a plane using spherical projection methods, and for the above orientation analysis, stereographic projection and equal-area projection (or equal-area projection), especially equal-area projection, are often used. …
