Shibayama Burial Mounds
A general term for the group of ancient tombs and tombs found mainly in Shibayama and Yokoshiba towns in Sanbu County, Chiba Prefecture. Built on low hills in the Kido and Takaya river basins, there are more than 400 of them. They consist of many small circular tombs and a few keyhole-shaped tombs. The leading tombs in the group are Tonozuka Tomb and Himezuka Tomb. The two tombs are located close to each other and both face west. They were excavated by Takiguchi Hiroshi in 1956. Tonozuka Tomb is 86m long, 51m in diameter at the rear and 58m wide at the front, and is surrounded by two moats. There is a horizontal stone chamber in the rear, and grave goods such as beads, earrings, bronze pots, swords, and arrowheads have been excavated.

千葉県山武郡芝山・横芝両町を中心に分布する古墳および古墳群の総称。木戸・高谷両川流域の低丘陵上に築かれ,400基以上を数える。多数の小円墳と若干の前方後円墳とからなる。群中の盟主級の古墳として,殿塚古墳,姫塚古墳がある。両墳は近接して営まれ,ともに西面する。1956年滝口宏によって発掘された。殿塚古墳は,全長86m,後円部径51m,前方部幅58mをはかり,周濠が二重にめぐる。後円部に横穴式石室を有し,副葬品として玉類,耳環,銅鋺(かなまり),刀,鏃などの出土をみた。
