〘Noun〙① (The time when the pinecone buds grow) One of the 72 seasons. The third season of the summer solstice. It is the 11th day after the summer solstice, which corresponds to the current July 2nd. There is a custom of not eating any vegetables on this day, as it is believed that poisonous air will fall, and not eating bamboo shoots, as it is the time when bamboo joint worms will appear. Hange. [Season: Summer] *Hong Gui Naiden (possibly late 14th century) 3 "About the hanging summer, the 11th day of May should be noted. On this day, do not commit any impurity , do not commit any sexual desires, and do not eat any spicy alcohol or meat."② A perennial plant of the Houttuynia family. It grows in low-lying wetlands from Honshu to Okinawa, and is sometimes cultivated for ornamental or medicinal purposes. It is 0.6 to 1 meter tall. It has a certain odor all over. The leaves are oblong and slightly ear-shaped at the base, about 10 centimeters long. In July, two or three leaves with white lower halves grow at the top of the stem, and from the sides hang densely-growing pale yellow insect-pollinated flowers. The stems and leaves are used in stomach and expectorant medicines. The Japanese name is said to come from the fact that the white leaves grow around the time of the summer solstice, or from the fact that half of the leaves are white and half are made up.
