Substituting automobiles for rail transport. For freight transport, examples include switching to trucks to streamline and consolidate unprofitable local lines, and truck transport substituting for train freight transport on lines in large cities with limited track capacity, such as the Yamanote Line in Tokyo. For passenger transport, examples include JR buses providing temporary transport until a new railway line is built. Also includes automobile replacement transport in the event of a disaster. Automobiles, which have small transport lots, are suitable for transporting cargo and passengers in sections with small volumes, and there are cases in which automobile transport has been substituted in many areas following the closure of unprofitable local lines.
