Dhammapada - Hokukyo

A scripture of early Buddhism. The Pali text is called the Dhammapada and belongs to the minor section. It is probably one of the oldest of the various sources, and is the most widely recited by Buddhists to this day. It is in poetic (rhyming) form, with 423 verses in the Pali text and 500 in the Chinese translation, divided into 26 chapters based on themes, but the Chinese translation adds another 13 chapters and 258 verses. The writing is simple and contains deep religious insights, making it the so-called bible of Buddhism. There are also variant versions such as the Dhammapada, Gandhari Dharmapada, Udanabarga, and Shuyokyo, and Hiromoto Mizuno's Study of the Dhammapada (1981, Shunjusha) covers all of them and compares and contrasts them. There are also many Japanese translations and commentaries.

原始仏教の経典。パーリ語テキストは『ダンマパダ』Dhammapadaと称し、小部に属する。諸資料のうち、おそらく最古のものの一つで、もっとも広く仏教徒に愛唱されて今日に至る。詩（韻文）形式で、パーリ語は423偈(げ)、相当する漢訳は500偈で、テーマなどにより26章に分けられているが、漢訳テキストにはさらに13章258偈が追加された。文章は平明で、深い宗教的境地が盛り込まれており、仏教のいわゆるバイブルの役割を果たしている。なお『法句譬喩(ひゆ)経』『ガンダーリー・ダルマパダ』『ウダーナバルガ』『出曜経(しゅっようきょう)』などの異本があり、水野弘元著『法句経の研究』（1981・春秋社）はすべてを網羅し、比較対照する。また邦訳、解説書も多数ある。
