A scale showing the rate at which the viscosity of a lubricating oil changes with temperature. Abbreviated as VI. Generally, lubricating oils rich in paraffin exhibit excellent properties, with little change in viscosity with temperature. In this case, the viscosity index will be a high value. The method for measuring the viscosity index is specified in the JIS. The kinetic viscosity of the lubricating oil is measured at 100°C and 40°C, and the viscosity index is calculated from these values. [Tominaga Hiroo]

潤滑油の粘度が温度によって変化する割合を示す尺度。VIと略記する。一般にパラフィン分に富む潤滑油は粘度の温度による変化が少ない優れた性質を示す。この場合には粘度指数が高い値をとる。粘度指数の測定法はJISに定められている。100℃および40℃において潤滑油の動粘度を測定し，これらの値から計算により粘度指数を求める。【冨永博夫】
