A scale showing the rate at which the viscosity of a lubricating oil changes with temperature. Abbreviated as VI. Generally, lubricating oils rich in paraffin exhibit excellent properties, with little change in viscosity with temperature. In this case, the viscosity index will be a high value. The method for measuring the viscosity index is specified in the JIS. The kinetic viscosity of the lubricating oil is measured at 100°C and 40°C, and the viscosity index is calculated from these values.
