…Egypt and Sudan became the crossroads of the British trans-African policy, which aimed to connect Cairo to the Cape Colony, and the French trans-African policy, which aimed to connect Somaliland on the Red Sea coast to Senegal on the Atlantic coast. In July 1898, the French troops under the command of Colonel J.B. Marchand (1863-1934) left the Congo and occupied Fashoda in the Nile Valley, but British General H.H. Kitchener (1850-1916) marched up the Nile into Sudan, and on September 19, he went to Fashoda and demanded the withdrawal of the French troops. Tensions between Britain and France rose, but diplomatic negotiations led to the French side making concessions and withdrawing, and the incident was officially resolved by an agreement concluded in March the following year. …
