…The greatest Christian Latin writer before Christianity was officially recognized was Tertullian, but Cyprian had a greater influence on later generations. After Christianity was officially recognized in 313, from the 4th to 5th centuries, Juvencus, who turned the Gospel of Matthew into an epic poem, the orator Lactantius, the hymn-writer and mystic Ambrose who opposed humanism, the greatest Christian Latin poet of antiquity, Prudentius, and his successor Paulinus of Nola, were active, but two of the greatest Christian writers of antiquity also appeared. One was Jerome, a humanist who was well versed in all the classical writers, but who translated the Bible into Latin and correlated pagan traditions with Christianity. The other was Augustine, famous for his works such as the first European autobiography, Confessions, and The City of God. …
