A town in Kanoashi County in the southwest of Shimane Prefecture. Population 1940 (1995). It occupies the upper reaches of the Takatsu River and is a mountain village in the Chugoku Mountains bordering Yamaguchi Prefecture to the west. During the feudal era, it was on the route connecting Tsuwano Castle and Hatsukaichi in Aki Province, and flourished as a post town. It has extensive forests, is a thriving forestry industry, and produces shiitake mushrooms, wasabi, and chestnuts. Ayu fishery is carried out in the Takatsu River, and there is a seed center that cultivates yamame and amago trout. In Fukugawa, there are the remains of the kiln and the grave of Korean potter Kiriko, who was brought back to Japan during the Bunroku-Keicho War. National Route 187 runs along the Takatsu River. 島根県南西部,鹿足(かのあし)郡の町。人口1940(1995)。高津川の上流域を占め,西は山口県に接する中国山地の山村。藩政時代には津和野城下と安芸国の廿日市を結ぶ参勤交代路にあり,宿場町として栄えた。山林が広く,林業が盛んで,シイタケ,ワサビ,栗を産する。高津川ではアユ漁が行われ,ヤマメやアマゴの養殖を行う種苗センターがある。福川には文禄・慶長の役に連れ帰った朝鮮の陶工季郎子の窯跡と墓がある。高津川沿いに国道187号線が通じる。
