…It was around this time that he began to take photographs, taking huge wet plate photographs of the landscapes of the Rocky Mountains, including Yosemite Valley. Muybridge's landscape photographs, along with those of his contemporaries Carleton Watkins (1825-1916), William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), and Timothy H. O'Sullivan (1840-1982), are famous for recording the landscapes of the American West during the pioneering era. In 1872, at the request of Leland Stanford (former Governor of California), he created a special photosensitive plate and exposure device to settle a controversy over whether a horse's four legs leave the ground when it runs, and succeeded in taking high-speed instantaneous photographs, proving that its four legs leave the ground. …
