Seniority is the overall system of personnel treatment centered on seniority. The term seniority has been used in two senses: (1) the skill that a worker acquires through many years of experience, and (2) the merit that a worker receives from working for a particular company for many years. In Japanese labor-management relations, seniority, which has these two meanings, has been the principle that underpins various personnel treatment systems. This is well represented in the status (now often called qualifications) and job classification (now often called job system) systems shown in the table.
