Chinchilla
A rodent mammal of the Chinchilla family. Also known as the Chilean chinchilla. It resembles a squirrel, with a body length of 25-26 cm and a tail length of 15 cm. Its fur is a marbled gray-blue and black color. It is found in the Andes Mountains of Chile. It lives in the barren areas of the high mountains and goes out at night to eat grass. Its fur is very fine and soft, and its fur is very expensive. It was once on the verge of extinction due to overhunting, but is now protected and is farmed for fur in the United States and other countries. It gives birth to 1-6 babies per litter, usually 2-3 babies. In the same genus is the Bolivian chinchilla (Chibiochinchilla), found in the Lake Titicaca region.

齧歯(げっし)目チンチラ科の哺乳(ほにゅう)類。チリチンチラとも。形はリスに似て体長25〜26cm,尾長15cm。毛色は灰青色と黒色の霜降。チリのアンデス山脈に分布する。高山の荒地にすみ,夜出歩いて草を食べる。毛がきわめて細く柔らかで,毛皮はきわめて高価。乱獲されて一時絶滅にひんしたが,現在は保護され,米国をはじめ各国で毛皮用に養殖されている。1腹1〜6子,ふつう2〜3子を生む。同属にチチカカ湖地方のチビオチンチラ(ボリビアチンチラ)がある。
