A rodent mammal of the Chinchilla family. Also known as the Chilean chinchilla. It resembles a squirrel, with a body length of 25-26 cm and a tail length of 15 cm. Its fur is a marbled gray-blue and black color. It is found in the Andes Mountains of Chile. It lives in the barren areas of the high mountains and goes out at night to eat grass. Its fur is very fine and soft, and its fur is very expensive. It was once on the verge of extinction due to overhunting, but is now protected and is farmed for fur in the United States and other countries. It gives birth to 1-6 babies per litter, usually 2-3 babies.
