In Zen Buddhism, this is a story about the transmission of the Buddhist teachings by Shakyamuni (Shaka) and his disciple Kashyapa. When Shakyamuni held up a lotus flower to show the crowd on Mount Vulture Peak, the crowd all fell silent, except for Kashyapa, who smiled. Shakyamuni then conveyed the Buddhist truth of "Shobogenzo Nehan Myoshin, Jisso Musou Mimyohomon" to Kashyapa. This story first appeared in the Northern Song Dynasty false sutra "Daibonten no Mon Butsuketsugikyo" (The Great Brahma King Asks the Buddha to Determine Doubt), but was widely used in Zen Buddhism after the Song Dynasty to support the claim of "Ishin denshin furyu monji" (the ability to communicate with the mind without relying on words). It explains that the teachings of Shakyamuni cannot be grasped through intellectual discrimination.
