…While investigating the effects of compounds of various transition metals other than nickel, it was found that the polymerization of ethylene was easily induced by a mixture of triethylaluminum and titanium tetrachloride. This discovery was expanded by Italian G. Natta, who found that propylene, which had previously been considered very difficult to polymerize, could be easily polymerized by a similar catalyst, triethylaluminum-titanium trichloride system (Ziegler-Natta catalyst). In particular, it was found that the polypropylene obtained by this polymerization reaction had a very regular molecular structure, and this opened up a new field that had not existed until then: the reaction that produces such a polymer (called a stereoregular polymer), that is, stereospecific polymerization. …
