An Indian linguist from the 6th to 5th centuries BCE. Famous for his Sanskrit etymology (nirukta). Author of the oldest surviving book on etymology, which developed in part due to the difficulty of the Vedic languages. Also considered one of the sources for the Pānini grammar. 前6～5世紀頃のインドの言語学者。サンスクリット語の語源解釈学 niruktaで有名。ベーダ語の難解さが原因の一つとなって発展した語源解釈学の現存最古の書物の著者。パーニニ文法の資料の一つともされた。
