A one-volume book on waka poetry from the early Kamakura period written by Kamo no Chomei. It was probably written shortly after 1211 (Kenryaku 1). It contains about 80 chapters, long and short, on points to note and techniques for composing waka poetry, as well as poems, waka theory, and stories related to poets. Many of the stories about poets such as Fujiwara no Shunzei, Minamoto no Toshiyori, and Minamoto no Yorimasa are interesting and not found in other books. Although it is a book on waka poetry, it also has a strong essay-like tone, and the memories and memorable words of Chomei's waka teacher Shun'e and his biwa teacher Nakahara Ariyasu are recorded, bringing to light the character of Chomei. It is an excellent resource for exploring the state of the waka world at the time and the image of Kamo no Chomei as a person, and is also extremely important for understanding his masterpiece, "Hojoki" (written in 1212).
