A river in northern Manitoba, Canada. It flows out of Lake Winnipeg, where the Saskatchewan River flows, into Hudson Bay, and is 640 km long. If the Saskatchewan River and Lake Winnipeg are added, the river is nearly 3000 km long. Port Nelson is at its mouth. It freezes over in winter. It was discovered by the Englishman Lord Batten in 1612, and was named after the captain of the ship he was on. It was an important transportation route for the Hudson's Bay Company.
