From the late 10th century to the early 11th century, an important school of Anglo-Saxon manuscript painting, known as the Winchester School, was active in the monastic workshops of Winchester. This school was successful in integrating Carolingian art with the Anglo-Saxon tradition, and its style spread to Canterbury and other areas.
