Nałkowska, Zofia
Born: November 10, 1884 in Warsaw
Died December 14, 1954. Warsaw. Polish female writer. One of the leading figures in 20th century Polish literature. Influenced by her father, a geographer and progressive social activist, she awakened to social consciousness at a young age, and by the age of 17, she was already publishing symbolist poems in magazines. She soon moved to prose, and established herself as a writer with her first novel, Książę (The Duke), in 1907. After that, she wrote many works that depicted the psychology of women with delicate writing, including her masterpiece, Granica (1935). Her collection of short stories, Medaliony (46), published just after World War II, is a masterpiece that brilliantly denounces Hitler's war crimes in clear, concise prose. She received the State Prize for Literature in 1936 and 1953.
