Jukichi Yagi

Japanese:
Jukichi Yagi

Poet. Born in Minamitama, Tokyo (Machida City). He was baptized in 1919 (Taisho 8) while studying at Tokyo Higher Normal School, but gradually came to embrace Kanzo Uchimura's non-church faith. In 1921, he was appointed as an English teacher at Mikage Normal School in Hyogo Prefecture, where he became passionate about writing poetry and began to aim for the integration of poetry and faith. In 1925, he was transferred to Chiba Prefectural Higashi Katsushika Junior High School, where he published his first collection of poems, "Autumn Eyes," and became a member of the "Poetry House" group, which was led by Sounosuke Sato. However, he became bedridden due to tuberculosis the following year, and passed away on October 26, 1927 (Showa 2). After his death, his second collection of poems, "Poor Believers" (1928), which he had selected himself, was published. The poems, which take the surrounding nature and family as their themes, simply express in short colloquial passages the rigors and joys of living a life of sincere faith.
