Lucca is the capital of the province of Lucca in the northwest of Tuscany, in central-west Italy. It is located about 60 km west of Florence, near the Serchio River. In ancient times, it was inhabited by the Ligurians and then the Etruscans. In the 3rd century BC, it was occupied by the Romans and became their military camp, the remains of which can be seen to the north of the city. In the 11th century, it became an autonomous city and prospered through wool and silk weaving. In the 16th century, it became the center of the Protestant Reformation, but was later overtaken by Florence. Today, it is a distribution center for a rich agricultural region, and agricultural product processing industries such as wine, olive oil, silk, and tobacco are carried out. There are many historic buildings, including the Cathedral of St. Martin, which has a Romanesque exterior and a Gothic interior, and the Cathedral of St. Michele, built in the 12th century. Population: 86,188 (1991 estimate). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
