The city occupies the Nemuro Peninsula at the eastern end of Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city in 1957. On the north coast, Nemuro Port faces the Sea of Okhotsk, and on the south coast, Hanasaki Port faces the Pacific Ocean. The city center, the terminus of the Nemuro Main Line, developed around Nemuro Port on the north coast. The city is known for its fisheries, including kelp, salmon, cod, pacific saury, and crab, and has many fish processing plants and refrigeration factories. The crab canning industry is particularly thriving. Since Nemuro Port freezes over in winter, Hanasaki Port on the south coast, which does not freeze over, is used. Dairy farming is practiced, but the cool climate makes it unsuitable for grain cultivation. Lake Furen and Nemuro Kurumaishi (natural monuments) are located here, and Cape Ochiishi at the southern end is a natural habitat for Sakai Azalea (natural monument). In 2005, Lake Furen and Shunkunitai were registered as Ramsar wetlands. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 506.25 km2 (including 94.84 km2 of the Habomai Islands). 29,201 people (2010). → Related Articles Nemuro [Branch Office] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
