Sleeping Beauty - Slyashaya krasavitsa; The Sleeping Beauty
A ballet consisting of a prologue and three acts and four scenes. The libretto was written by Marius Petipa and Ivan Vsevolozhsky, based on a fairy tale by Charles Perrault. Music by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. Choreography by Petipa. Set by Vsevolozhsky. It premiered in St. Petersburg in 1890. It is a lavish spectacle ballet with many dancers and devices, and is one of Petipa's greatest masterpieces. A revised version by Bronislava Nijinska was performed by the Ballets Russes in 1921, and was well received, but it was too expensive to produce and did not become part of the repertoire. Although it has been said to be a difficult piece to perform since then, the Petipa version was revived by Nikolai Sergeyev with the Sadler's Wells Ballet in 1939, and it has been performed repeatedly with various choreographies to this day. The full version was first performed in Japan in 1952 by the Komaki Ballet.
