A type of theatre that breaks away from traditional dramaturgy and seeks to approach human existence using a method that can truly be called unique to theatre. It is not a unified doctrine or movement, but refers to a common tendency that spread to Europe and America, primarily France, after World War II. There is no plot or character setting in the traditional sense, nor does it raise or analyze psychological, ethical or social issues. In situations where time and place are unclear, characters who have lost their individuality and background repeatedly perform strange, meaningless actions. Through this series of unrealistic images, universal human suffering, the absurdity of human existence and the feelings of anxiety that this causes are expressed. Representative writers include E. Ionesco, S. Beckett, A. Adamov, and F. Arrabal. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
