A culture from the late Neolithic period of Upper Egypt. It is thought to date to around 4500-4000 BC, and Del Tasa on the east bank of the Nile in Middle Egypt is the standard site. Perhaps because the inhabitants were semi-sedentary and semi-nomadic, only the remains of a hearth are known from their dwellings. The graves were oval pit-style graves, and the bodies were buried in a flexed position, with pottery, ivory, and shell ornaments being buried with them. Most of the pottery is crude, but old types of black-topped pottery and open-rimmed black pottery with geometric patterns engraved into it using white pigment are known, and rectangular palettes have also been excavated. There is also a theory that this is not an independent cultural period, but rather an early stage of the Badari culture.
