This is a Yayoi period site located near the top of Mt. Karakami, about 90 meters above sea level, in Higashi-Satsuma, Katsumoto-cho, Iki-gun, Nagasaki Prefecture. On the top of the mountain, overlooking Yunomoto Bay, is Karakami Shrine, and there is a layer containing artifacts on the slopes around the shrine. The site was discovered around 1920, and mirrors and Han-style pottery were excavated. It is also called Karakami Shell Mound because of the shell layer. In 1977, the East Asian Archaeological Society investigated the site, and stone axes, iron harpoons, iron sickles, iron hacksaws, antler-attached knives, and bronze arrowheads were excavated from the layer from the middle to late Yayoi period, and whalebone harpoons, iron arrowheads, iron hacksaws, antler-attached knives, bronze arrowheads, and nearly complete Han-style pottery were excavated from the layer from the later period. Together with the Harunotsuji site, it has become known as a representative Yayoi period site showing the transition from stone tools to iron tools.
