A state in the western United States. Abbreviated as Nev. or NV. Most of the state is in the Great Basin, surrounded by the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains, and has a desert or steppe climate. Agriculture is limited to some irrigated areas. Large-scale grazing is practiced, and cattle and sheep are the mainstay of the state's finances. Tourism revenues are the state's main source of income, and the state is well known for Hoover Dam, mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada, skiing, and legal gambling in Reno and Las Vegas. Copper, gold, and other minerals are also produced. The state was first settled in 1851 and joined the Union in 1864. The state capital is Carson City.
