Sadachika Ise

Japanese:
Sadachika Ise
Year of death: Bunmei 5.2.21 (1473.3.19)
Year of birth: 1417
A shogunate official in the Muromachi period. Son of Sadakuni. Hyogo no Suke and Ise no Kami. In 1454, he succeeded his father Sadakuni in the service of the Muromachi shogunate, but his family position as steward of the administrative office was taken by Nikaido Tadayuki, and he finally assumed the position in 1460. After that, he teamed up with Suenori Shinzui, head of Shokokuji Inryoken, who was a monk recorder, and gradually became involved in shogunate politics, serving as the head magistrate of the palace and stables, and gaining the trust of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. What made their involvement in politics possible was not only the incompetence of Shogun Yoshimasa, but also the chaos caused by internal strife among the powerful shugo families and the resulting collapse of the senior retainer system. In July 1466, he intervened in a dispute in the Shiba clan and worked to support Yoshimitsu, and in September of the same year, he took advantage of the birth of Ashikaga Yoshihisa by Hino Tomiko to plot to assassinate Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, but was criticized by senior retainers such as Hosokawa Katsumoto and fled to Omi. This was the Bunsho Coup, which became the fuse for the Onin War that began six months later. He returned to the shogunate soon after the outbreak of the war, but Yoshimi, disgusted by this, threw himself into the Western Army (Yamana Mochitoyo's side), furthering the chaos of the war. In 1471, he resigned from his official position and became a monk. An authority on samurai customs, he gave his son Sadamune, "Ise Sadachika Kyokun," an important historical document that conveys the customs and educational ideas of Muromachi society that approved of bribery. He is also interesting as one of the main instigators of the war and as a man who stood at a turning point in shogunate politics. <References> Niki Kenichi, "Research on Medieval Samurai Ceremonies"
