Brachyponera chinensis (large needle ant)

Japanese: オオハリアリ(大針蟻) - オオハリアリ（英語表記）Brachyponera chinensis

An insect of the family Formicidae in the order Hymenoptera. It is the most common species of ant in the subfamily Porphyrinae, with worker ants measuring 4.5-5 mm in length and black with a slight sheen. It nests underground or in rotten wood, and is carnivorous, preying on small insects. Male and female winged ants appear in early summer. It is found throughout Japan except for Hokkaido and the northern part of the Tohoku region, and is also known to be found in the Korean peninsula, Taiwan, and parts of China. Its venomous stinger is well developed, and when it stings, it causes a pain similar to that of a bee sting. Generally, it has little connection to human life, but there have been cases where this ant has appeared in mine tunnels and caused harm to workers.

膜翅目アリ科の昆虫。ハリアリ亜科のアリではもっともふつうに見られる種類で，働きアリの体長は4.5～5mm，全体に黒色で多少光沢がある。地中や朽木の中などに営巣し，肉食性で小型の昆虫などを捕食する。雌雄の羽アリは初夏のころに出現する。北海道，東北地方の北部を除く日本全国に分布するほか，朝鮮半島，台湾，中国の一部からも知られている。毒針がよく発達していて，刺されるとハチに刺されたような痛みがある。一般的には人間生活とはほとんどかかわりがないが，このアリが鉱山の坑道内に発生し作業員が被害を受けた例がある。
