Nagao Tamekage - Nagao Tamekage

A military commander during the Sengoku period. Shugodai (deputy governor) of Echigo Province. Son of Nagao Yoshikage, Shugodai (deputy governor) of Echigo Province. Father of Kagetora (Uesugi Kenshin). Danjo Saemonnojo, Shinano no Kami. His religious names were Sokyu, Kohaku, Toukeian Sokou, and Monchikuan Chojo. His posthumous name was Doshichi. In August 1507 (Eisho 4), he came into conflict with Shugo Uesugi Fusayoshi, defeating him and placing Uesugi Sadazane in the position of Shugo. In 1513, he came into conflict with Uesugi Sadazane. In May of the following year, he defeated him, creating a situation where there was no Shugo and trying to rule the country. In 1528 (Kyoroku 1), Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiharu granted him the right to wear a white umbrella bag and a felt saddle cover, which successfully raised the family's status. In 1536 (Tenbun 5), he was defeated in a battle with Uesugi clan leader Kamijo Sadanori and other powerful feudal lords who opposed the expansion of the Nagao clan's power, and retired, handing the family headship over to Nagao Harukage. He died on December 24, 1541.

戦国期の武将。越後国守護代。越後国守護代長尾能景(よしかげ)の子。景虎(かげとら)（上杉謙信）の父。弾正左衛門尉(だんじょうさえもんのじょう)、信濃守。道号は蘇久(そきゅう)・黄博(こうはく)・桃渓庵宗弘(とうけいあんそうこう)・紋竹庵張恕(もんちくあんちょうじょ)。法名道七。1507年（永正4）8月、守護上杉房能(ふさよし)と対立し敗死させ、上杉定実(さだざね)を守護の地位につける。1513年には上杉定実と対立。翌年5月これを下し、守護不在の状況をつくり一国を支配しようとした。1528年（享禄1）将軍足利義晴から、白傘袋(しろかさぶくろ)・毛氈鞍覆(もうせんくらおおい)の格式を許され、家格を上昇させることに成功。1536年（天文5）長尾氏の勢力拡大に反対する上杉一族の上条定憲(じょうじょうさだのり)や有力領主層との抗争に敗れ隠居し、長尾晴景に家督を譲った。1541年12月24日、死去。
