Bulb mites

Japanese: ネダニ - ねだに（英語表記）bulb mites

A mite of the Acaridae family. The body is oval, milky white and shiny, and partly brown. The jaws and legs are reddish brown. Females are about 0.7 mm long, with thick, short legs, and the third and fourth legs are usually almost hidden under the body and cannot be seen. Some of the hairs on the legs are thick and cone-shaped. Males are about 0.6 mm long, and the fourth leg has two suckers on the terminal segment. There is an inactive hypopus stage between the two nymph stages, and development may proceed without going through the hypopus stage. A common agricultural pest worldwide, it feeds on the bulbs of many plants, including lilies, scallions, leeks, onions, and tulips.

コナダニ科のダニ。胴部は卵形，乳白色で光沢をもち，部分的に褐色。顎体部や脚は赤褐色。雌は体長0.7mm内外，脚は太短く，第3,4脚は通常は胴部の下にほとんど隠れていて見えない。脚の毛の一部は円錐形で，太い。雄は体長0.6mm内外，第4脚は末端節に2個の吸盤を付属する。二つの若虫期の間に不活動のヒポプスhypopus期がある場合と，ヒポプスを経ないで発育が進む場合とがある。世界共通の農業害虫で，ユリ，ラッキョウ，ネギ，タマネギ，チューリップなど多くの植物の球根を食害する。
