Japanese: ラダン（英語表記）ladang

In Indonesian and Malaysian, it means "field." It is the opposite of sawa, which means rice paddy, and is often used to refer specifically to slash-and-burn fields. Tegal, which also means field and is of Javanese origin, does not usually have this nuance. In the Indonesian islands other than Java, Bali, and Lombok, where rice paddy cultivation has been practiced since ancient times and slash-and-burn cultivation disappeared relatively early, rice paddy cultivation in irrigated land is rare, with a few exceptions such as the highland rice-growing areas of Sumatra and Sulawesi, and various types of rain-fed rice cultivation and cultivation of upland rice and potatoes by slash-and-burn cultivation are widely practiced.

インドネシア語，マレーシア語で〈畑地〉を意味する。水田を意味するサワの対語であり，しばしば，とくに焼畑地を指して用いられる。やはり畑地を意味するジャワ語起源のテガルtegalには，普通こうしたニュアンスは含まれない。水田稲作が古くから行われ，比較的早い時期に焼畑耕作が消滅したジャワ，バリ，ロンボク以外のインドネシアの諸島では，スマトラ，スラウェシの高地稲作地帯など若干の例外を除き，灌漑地における水田耕作はまれで，種々の天水田耕作や，焼畑による陸稲，いも類の栽培が広範に行われている。
