Maonan tribe (Maonan people) - Maonan tribe (English spelling) Máo nán zú
One of China's ethnic minorities. They live in areas such as Hechi, Nantan, Yishan, and Duan, centered around Huanjiang County in the northern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The population was 72,400 (1990). Their language belongs to the Dong-Sui (Shui) branch of the Zhuang-Dong (Dong) family, a Sino-Tibetan language family. They call themselves Maunan or Ainan. In Chinese classics, they are written as Maonan, Maotan, Maotan, and Maonan. They live on small plains and mountain basins bordering rivers, and are engaged in paddy rice cultivation, but also grow corn and wheat. Rice is their staple food, and they eat glutinous rice on festival days.

中国の少数民族の一つ。広西チワン(壮)族自治区北部の環江県を中心に,河池,南丹,宜山,都安などの地域に居住する民族。人口は7万2400(1990)。言語はシナ・チベット語系チワン・トン(侗)語族トン・スイ(水)語支に属する。自称はマウナン,アイナンである。漢籍には毛難のほか茆灘,茅灘,冒南などと記される。河川に面した小平野や山間盆地に居住し水稲耕作に従事しているが,トウモロコシ,小麦などもつくる。米を主食とし,節日にはもちごめ食品を食べる。
