A university in Warsaw, Poland. It was founded by the Russian tsar in 1818, based on the law school (1808) and medical school (1809) established during the Grand Duchy of Warsaw. The university was closed in 1830 after the failure of the November Uprising by the Polish people, but reopened in 1862. It was closed again by the Nazis during World War II and destroyed in the war, but was rebuilt after the war and is the largest and most advanced university in Poland. Currently, it has 18 faculties (biology, chemistry, physics, geology, mathematics and computer science, modern linguistics, Russian and applied linguistics, Polish linguistics, journalism and political science, history, philosophy and sociology, law and public administration, economics, education, psychology, geography and regional studies, business administration, and social policy), as well as the American Studies Center and the Geological Museum.
