Mononobe Tamekuni - Mononobe Tamekuni

Japanese:
Mononobe Tamekuni - Mononobe Tamekuni
Years of birth: unknown. An architectural carpenter from the mid-Kamakura period. He worked as a carpenter on the construction of the worship hall at Koyasan's Okuin in 1223, and on the repairs of Byodoin's Phoenix Hall in 1234 and 1235. He also worked as a carpenter on the construction of the Buddhist hall at Tofukuji Temple, which was founded by Kujo Michiie, in 1239. Judging from the existing Sanmon gate of the temple (rebuilt in 1405), it seems that the Daibutsu-yo technique was introduced to Tofukuji Temple, and for this reason Tamekuni is considered to be a direct descendant of Ise Gondayu Mononobe Tamesato, who worked under Chogen on the reconstruction of Todaiji Temple after the fire in 1180. It is interesting to note that Todaiji-related carpenters were involved in the spread of the new Daibutsu-yo technique. <References> Okawa Naomune, "Bansho"
