Nestorian - Nestorius is (English spelling) Nestorians
Historically, it was a Christian sect in Asia Minor and Syria that rejected the condemnation of the teachings of Patriarch Nestorius by the Councils of Ephesus (431) and Chalcedon (451). From the middle of the 3rd century, a Christian community developed in Edessa, but under the influence of Metropolitan Barsmas of Nisibis, Nestorianism was accepted in 486, and the school in Edessa became the center of resistance. When the school was closed by imperial order in 489, it moved to Nisibis, where a school was formed, and spread to Persia, Arabia, Egypt, India, and China. In China, it flourished under the name Nestorianism from the 7th to 10th centuries, and in Central Asia it spread to some Tatar tribes and reached Lake Baikal. It declined after the Mongols converted to Islam in the late 13th century, and was almost destroyed by Emperor Timur in the 14th century. The Assyrian sect, known as the Nestorian Church, has about 170,000 adherents in Iraq, Syria, Iran, and other areas.
