A full-length novel by Tokuda Shusei. First published in the Yomiuri Shimbun in 1910 (Meiji 43), it was published by Shinchosha in 1919. It is a companion piece to Mold, and is based on the first half of Shusei's life before he married his wife, Hamano. Osho's family moves to Tokyo to try to make a name for themselves in the city with the money they made from selling their farmland and house in their hometown, but the father's business fails and the family is torn apart. Leaving her parents, Osho moves from one household to another, working in a haberdashery in Asakusa, helping her aunt who runs a boarding house in Yushima, and working as a maid for a merchant in Nihonbashi. She then becomes the wife of a restaurant owner in the suburbs, but becomes fed up with her husband and runs away from there. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
