Mitsuki Iga - Tsusue Igami

Japanese:
Mitsuki Iga - Tsusue Igami

A samurai from the early Kamakura period. The eldest son of Fujiwara Tomomitsu, the Iga no Kami (Lord of Iga) and a senior retainer of the Kamakura Shogunate, his mother was the daughter of Nikaido Masayoshi, a Shogunate official. He was the elder brother of the Shogunate regent Hojo Yoshitoki's concubine, who was on the Iga side. As Yoshitoki's brother-in-law, he played an important role in Shogunate politics. He held the rank of Hyoe no Jo, Saemon no Jo, and Kebiishi, and was a Junior Fifth Rank (Jugoi no Ge). In September 1212 (Kenryaku 2), he was confirmed as the land steward of Nakasaigun, Hitachi Province. In February 1219 (Jokyu 1), he was appointed as the Kyoto Shugo together with Oe Chikahiro, a shogunate official, and traveled to Kyoto to guard the capital, punish the surrounding provinces in the Kinai region, and communicate between the Imperial Court and the Shogunate. In February of the same leap year, he pacified a battle between the shogunate's samurai and in March, he captured a rebel in Omi. In July, he was ordered by the retired Emperor Go-Toba to kill Minamoto no Yorimasa's grandson and Ouchi Shugo Minamoto no Yorishige. During the Jokyu War in 1221, he did not respond to a summons from the retired Emperor Go-Toba, and was attacked by the retired Emperor's forces. On May 15, he committed suicide at his lodgings in Takatsuji Kyogoku along with his son Kotobuki Okanja Mitsutsuna and other vassals of the Nemoto clan. The shogunate received the first report of the rebellion thanks to a courier sent by Mitsusue. In addition to Mitsutsuna, he had four other sons, and his estates, including Shiogo-no-sho in Hitachi Province (present-day Shirosato Town, Higashiibaraki County, Ibaraki Prefecture), were left to his sons, Suemura Shiro, and others.
