A general term for birds of the passerine order, Icteridae family. This family consists of about 25 genera and 91 species. They are endemic to the New World and are distributed from Alaska to the southern tip of South America, but most species live in tropical and subtropical America. Many of the species that breed in North America are migratory birds, spending the winter in Central and South America. Total length is 17 to 55 cm. Small ones are small birds about the size of a white-throated sparrow, but larger species are about the size of a crow. The beak is somewhat elongated and conical, strong and pointed.
