Iheya Izena Islands

A group of islands located in the sea northwest of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. One of the Okinawa archipelago. In addition to the inhabited islands of Iheya Island, Izena Island, and Noho Island (area 1.06 square kilometers, registered population 117 in 2009), the group consists of uninhabited islands such as Gushikawa Island (0.47 square kilometers) and Yanaha Island (0.74 square kilometers). Most of the islands are mountainous areas made up of Paleozoic chert, but some are plateaus and alluvial lowlands made of Ryukyu limestone. The mountains are covered with subtropical natural forests, and a rich natural environment remains. The coast is surrounded by coral reefs, and there are also notable sand dunes.

沖縄県沖縄本島の北西海上に位置する島嶼(とうしょ)。沖縄諸島の一つ。伊平屋島、伊是名島、野甫島(のほじま)（面積1.06平方キロメートル、2009年の住民登録人口117）の有人島のほかは、具志川島（0.47平方キロメートル）、屋那覇島(やなはじま)（0.74平方キロメートル）などの無人島からなる。諸島の大部分は古生層チャートなどからなる山地部で占められるが、一部は琉球(りゅうきゅう)石灰岩の台地や、沖積低地となる。山地は亜熱帯性の天然林で覆われ、豊かな自然が残されている。海岸はサンゴ礁で囲まれ、砂丘の発達も顕著である。
