The Ivy League is a group of eight private universities in the eastern United States, consisting of Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale. It originally began as a football league that was informally formed in 1900. The word "Ivy" means "ivy," and it is said that the name was derived from the fact that these universities have long traditions and historic school buildings covered in ivy, or that the league was originally formed by four universities, and was written in Roman numerals as the IV League.
