superimposed title

...Originally a term in photography, it is a method of overlapping two photographic negative plates and printing them together to create a single photograph, known as double printing. It usually refers to the superimposed titles that are superimposed on the film screen, and specifically refers to Japanese subtitles that are added to foreign films. In Japan, this method has been used to make Japanese versions of foreign films since the early days of talkies (the first was Morocco, shown in 1931).
