…The son of a poor civil servant, he dropped out of both St. Petersburg and Moscow universities for financial reasons. Influenced by his cousin, the writer Nikolai V. Uspenskii (1837-89), he began his career as a writer in 1862. Following the tradition of naturalistic realism that had been passed down since Gogol, he published works such as “Encounter in the Village” (1865), “Manners of Rastelyaeva Street” (1866), and “Down” (1869), which depicted the miserable lives of the lower classes living in rural areas and on the outskirts of cities, in democratic magazines of the time, and received high praise. …
